The Portuguese Premeira Liga is the top league in Portugal. It was founded in 1934 and currently consists of 18 competing teams with the top 3 teams qualifying for the following season’s Champions League.

In 2012 the Primeira Liga overtook the French Ligue 1 in fifth place in UEFA’s European club league rankings. As of 2014, the league is still ranked 5^th in Europe.
